SoCal SuperTrucks backed Team Rocky Mountain ATV/MC closed out the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross season on a high note as Blake Baggett took 3rd place in the overall championship standings. Benny Bloss got his best moto finish of the season, and Dakota Alix rode impressively to close out the season!
Blake Baggett: 3rd Place Overall 450MX Class
Blake Baggett was well within striking distance of the championship as he lined up at the gate at Ironman. This was illustrated by his blazing fast practice laps that ended up being the third quickest posted all day!
As the gate dropped in Moto 1, Blake nearly missed getting the hole shot. After rounding the first corner, he took advantage of Eli Tomac going down and advanced into a battle with Marvin Musquin for position and championship points. He put in solid effort and fought hard until finally reaching the finish line in 3rd place.
Due to the results in Moto 1, Baggett and Musquin ended up tied in points going into the second moto. Depending on who beat who, one of them was taking 2nd place in the championship! As the gates dropped for Moto 2, Baggett launched off the line and got the hole shot and rounded turn one with Cole Seely and Marvin Musquin just behind him. Musquin quickly passed Seely, and now had Baggett in his sights. At the end of the first lap, it became apparent that there was one section that Baggett couldn’t seem to conquer with his injured thumb. Unfortunately, Musquin and Herlings were able to make up time here, and in lap 2 Blake was passed by Marvin.
Herlings worked his way up to right behind Blake, and with just 3 laps to go, made the pass. A mistake by Musquin allowed for Herlings to take the lead, and held it. As the checkered flag came out, Blake Bagget would place third in the race, and ultimately in the championship.
Blake later said, “I did what I needed to do out there,” said Blake. “Today I knew it was going to come down to who beat who for the points chase, and it did. I gave it my all, the track was so, so rough and unfortunately for me and my thumb, it was just all we had.”
Dakota Alix 18th Overall 450MX Class
Dakota Alix came into Ironman with a torn groin muscle he sustained during moto 2 at Budds Creek. Unfortunately, his sore leg did hinder him in the deep ruts, not allowing him to finish off the final race in the fashion he had been riding in since the mid-way point of the season. Alix started Moto 1 in the top 20, and continued to charge forward. He would ride a consistent race and work his way up to 17th place by the time the checkered flag came out.
Moto 2 started similar for Dakota, again starting inside the top twenty. He went on to ride a strong race and finished 18th. His 17-18 score got him an 18th place finish overall securing 14th place in the championship standings.
Benny Bloss 15th Overall 450MX Class
Benny Bloss seemed to have brought back his last years speed in moto 1 starting outside the top ten, to work his way up to 8th by the end of the race.
Moto 2 ended up being a bit more challenging for Bloss as he found himself a bit further back in the pack. Still, he put in work and made his way into the top ten. While going for 9th position, he went down in a corner. This spill unfortunately tweaked a simple item that took almost an entire lap to get fixed. Once he jumped back on the #34 machine, the moto was shot, but in typical Benny fashion – pulling off the track was not an option. He went on to complete the final moto of the day and cross the finish line for a 15th place overall finish giving him points for 19th in the championship.
